ABOUT 1Degree@aTime

1Degree@aTime is a program that assists non-profit organizations to find radically low-investment or preferably no-investment ways to improve comfort and lower energy costs.  We use the term “radical” because our approach is probably more rigorous than most in avoiding spending money, for a couple of reasons:

  • A typical energy efficiency program might include major replacements of windows or professional insulation; replacement of old equipment with more efficient new equipment; or implementation of entirely new HVAC systems, such as geothermal heat pumps or even solar heating.  But our assumption is that we should postpone such investments until we’ve worked long and hard to identify and try out the no-cost interventions, because these will help us reduce overall demand, scale down the size of any required equipment, and save money for future investment.
  • We’re particularly focused on organizations which have relatively large facilities and very small budgets (churches, schools, etc.) because that’s where HVAC energy costs are most painful and often have an outsized impact on programs and revenue.  These organizations have little or no money to invest in equipment or renovation.

Our site is a work in progress … it describes the approach and methodology of the program as we are developing it.  If you are interested in learning more, or in collaborating with us on an appropriate facility or education program, please let us know.
